Hedgehogs

19th Nov 2017

Ms. Water’s 4th class had a surprise visitor this week when Darragh O Neill’s mum, Danielle, brought in both an adult male and a female hedgehog along with a 6 week old hoglet. The class were fascinated to learn that baby hedgehogs when born have no spines but within 3 hours they have up to 100 spines and after 24 hours they are fully covered in spines. Hedgehogs cross over boundaries and territories which is why they are often on our roads leading to many misadventures. They have very few natural predators as their spines are so tough to overcome. When they are in danger they curl up into a ball due to their elasticated skin. Hedgehogs are nocturnal and can travel up to 5km every night.
