Challenge to Change
Challenge to Change
The Challenge to Change project, was held at the Lyrath Hotel in Kilkenny on
the 10th of April, hosted by the presentation sisters. Ten children, five from
Ms. Supple's 2nd class and five from Mrs. Nugent's 3rd class, participated in
the initiative, focusing on celebrating linguistic diversity and promoting
environmental sustainability.. The project was deeply rooted in the global
goals as it aimed to increase awareness around the languages spoken within
the classroom and within children's homes, while also addressing
environmental concerns through sustainable practices. In one class alone,
students spoke ten different languages, including Polish, Nigerian, Croatian,
Italian, Mandarin, Romanian, Moldovan, Indian, Spanish, and Portuguese. To
celebrate this diversity, the children surveyed their families, compiled the data
into a bar chart, and designed inclusive board games and flags representing
each language. They also explored the concept of "Say No to Plastic" by
researching alternatives to plastic, highlighting the eco-friendly practices in
these various countries. Through this, the project not only fostered inclusivity
but also encouraged a global perspective on both language and sustainability.
