April

In what was a short month in school we still managed to fit a lot in:

Marine Week

Following on from Blue day and as part of our Green Schools Campaign some of our classes engaged in lessons studying marine life this week. They learned about careers in Marine life such as Emer Friederike who is the Green School Marine officer and Professor Louise Allcock who is Professor of Zoology. They learned about sharks, how to keep our coasts clean and even about Marine aliens.

5th Class to Visual Carlow

Mr. Dunne’s 5th class went on their Educational tour to the Visual Theatre in Carlow.

Chess comp Celbridge

Following an impressive performance at our home tournament in February, our team Knightmare on Greyabbey Road were invited to participate in the Comórtas Fichille in North Kildare Educate together. We were very proud to have an opportunity to represent our school and performed very well on the day. We look forward to many more tournaments to come.

1st class Lidl farm

All the first class children went to visit Lidl farm this month. They visited the polytunnels to see how plants grow. They learned about cows and how much milk they produce. They even got to milk one! They also got a tour of the Lidl warehouse.

Confirmation

Congratulations to all the children in 6th class who made their confirmation this month.

Challenge to Change

St. Brigid’s Primary School was proud to participate in the Challenge to Change conference organised by the Presentation Sisters on April 28th at the Lyrath Estate Hotel. As founding members of SBPS, the Presentation Order continues to inspire our school community through initiatives that encourage students to care for others and for our world.

Challenge to Change promotes the importance of protecting our planet through the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), encouraging young people to become active global citizens. Mr. Dunne’s and Ms. Supple’s classes proudly created a display stand to showcase their project work and shared their learning with pupils and teachers from other Presentation schools.

A special highlight of the day was Alex’s confident speech explaining the project to the audience. Students also enjoyed workshops in music with Dave McGauran and ecology with Maura O'Dwyer. It was a fantastic celebration of creativity, collaboration and positive action for our planet.

Green Schools Update

Our Green-Schools theme for 2024–2026 is Global Citizenship: Marine Environment, focusing on protecting our oceans through the Sustainable Development Goals. Coordinated by Mr. Dunne, our active Green-Schools committee includes representatives from every class from 2nd to 6th Class. Through projects, events and competitions, pupils learn how everyone can play a part in protecting our seas and planet for future generations.

Following the election of the senior committee, Robyn Phelan (Ms. Hyland's 6th Class) was appointed GS Captain, with Emmet Hopkins (Ms. Andersen's 6th Class) and Aniela (Ms. Caulfields 5th Class) sharing the role of Vice-Captain. Together they oversee the work of the committee and work closely with teacher representatives to achieve their goals for global improvement.

Carrying on the fantastic work from the 24/25 committee, the 25/26 committee set the following goals:

- Reduce Single Use Plastic Use in SBPS.

- Increase knowledge of the impacts of SUP on our environment.

- Increase knowledge regarding the Marine Environment in SBPS.

- Create art displays using SUP.

In November 2025 our senior captains attended a Marine Environment workshop in Carlow with Mr. Dunne & Ms. Nel. As part of this day the children took part in lessons, quizzes, art activities and further goal planning.

In March 2026, our Green Schools Committee Hosted a call to action 'Blue Day' where our need to care for the oceans and cut out Single Use Plastics was highlighted. As part of this whole school celebration, classes took part in blue-themed dance parties, quizzes, informative lessons and videos and art collages.

In April our school received notice that as a result of the hard work and commitment of our pupils, that we had been awarded our 8th Green Flag for GC: Maine Environment. 6th Class representatives Robyn & Emmet joined Mr. Dunne & Mrs. Nugent in the Helix (DCU) for the Green Schools Award Ceremony in which the pupils were awarded their green flag, certificate of achievement and Green Schools ambassador pin.

Our school now looks forward to working towards our next Green Flag for Global Citizenship: Travel in 2028.
